When we first planned our Europe trip, Hallstatt was one of those places we felt we had to visit.
You’ve probably seen it before.
A small lakeside village surrounded by mountains, sitting quietly beside crystal-clear water. It’s one of Austria’s most photographed destinations and often appears on travel posters, Instagram feeds, and postcards around the world.
But after seeing so many edited photos online, we wondered:
Is Hallstatt actually worth visiting, or is it just another tourist trap?
After spending a day there, here’s our honest experience.
Getting To Hallstatt From Salzburg
We visited Hallstatt as a day trip from Salzburg.
The journey itself was part of the experience.
After arriving at Hallstatt station, we boarded the small ferry that crosses the lake into the village.
Do remember to bring some cash! When we back from Hallstatt to train station, the boat only accept cash.
As the boat approached the shoreline, the famous church tower slowly appeared against the mountains.
For a moment, everyone on the ferry seemed to stop talking.
Hallstatt really does look like a postcard.
First Impressions
The village is smaller than we expected.
You can walk through most of the old town within an hour.
There are flower-covered balconies, narrow alleyways, traditional Austrian houses, and lake views around almost every corner.
Despite the crowds, it still feels peaceful.
Instead of rushing between attractions, Hallstatt is the kind of place where you simply slow down and enjoy the scenery.
The Most Unexpected Attraction: The Bone House
While most visitors focus on the famous viewpoint, the most memorable part of our visit was actually the Bone House (Beinhaus).
Entry was only €2 per person, cash only.
Inside were hundreds of human skulls carefully arranged and decorated with flowers, leaves, crosses, and handwritten names.
At first it felt slightly eerie.
Then we learned the reason.
Because Hallstatt sits between the mountains and the lake, land has always been limited. The cemetery couldn’t expand, so after several years the remains of the deceased were exhumed and transferred into the Bone House to make room for new burials.
Many families painted and decorated the skulls to preserve the memory of their loved ones.
It’s one of the most unusual places we’ve visited during our world trip.
And definitely something we didn’t expect to find in a beautiful lakeside village.
Lunch In Hallstatt
After walking around the village, we stopped for lunch at Zum Bader.
We ordered:
- Grilled salmon with creamy risotto
- Austrian-style meat dish with mushroom sauce, bacon and croquettes
- Drinks
Total bill: €57.70
The food wasn’t cheap, but considering Hallstatt’s popularity and location, we thought the quality was reasonable.
The salmon was surprisingly good and the portion sizes were generous.
If you’re visiting Hallstatt for the day, this was one of the better meals we had in Austria.
Hallstatt Is Expensive (But Not As Expensive As We Expected)

For one of Europe’s most famous destinations, we actually expected to spend more.
Is Hallstatt Overrated?
Our answer is simple.
No.
But it depends on your expectations.
If you’re looking for a place packed with attractions, activities, and nightlife, Hallstatt may feel disappointing.
If you’re looking for stunning scenery, a relaxed atmosphere, and one of the most beautiful villages in Europe, Hallstatt absolutely delivers.
The village itself is small.
The experience is not.
Would We Recommend It?
Yes.
Especially if you’re already staying in Salzburg.
A single day is enough to see the highlights, enjoy a nice lunch, visit the Bone House, and take in the scenery.
We probably wouldn’t stay overnight.
But we’re glad we came.
Some places become famous because social media tells us they’re beautiful.
Hallstatt became famous because it genuinely is.
And after visiting for ourselves, we understand why.
Quick Tips For Visiting Hallstatt
✓ Bring cash for small attractions.
✓ Arrive early before the tour buses.
✓ Take the ferry at least once for the classic arrival view.
✓ Don’t skip the Bone House.
✓ Allow at least 4–6 hours to explore comfortably.
✓ If you’re coming from Salzburg, a day trip is enough.
